Monforte can boast very ancient origins, traces of Neolithic and Roman time settlements have been found in this area. Monforte owes its name to the castle surrounded by walls (“fortis”) that was built during the Middle Ages on the top of the hill (“mons”). It was taken by force by the army of the Archbishop of Milan, in 1028, in order to crush the Catharist ideology that had spread in this area and had involved the feudal lords.
During the 13th century, Monforte became first a Fee of the Marchesi Del Carretto, and later a Fee of the Marchesi Scarampi del Cairo. In 1703 it was conquered by the troops of the House of Savoy and became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
The village maintains untouched its old charm in the narrow cobblestone streets that lead to castle and the Auditorium on the top of the hill
